Описание: The morning fog hung thick over RAF Hawkinge on the Kent coast, November 12th, 1943. Flight Lieutenant James Calloway stood in the dispersal hut, nursing his third cup of weak tea, staring at the silhouette of his aircraft through the grimy window. The Westland Whirlwind sat on the hardstand like a forgotten relic, its twin engines housed in sleek nacelles that gave it an oddly graceful appearance, like a dragonfly that had somehow grown to the size of a small house. Most of the other pilots had already gone up in their Spitfires and Typhoons, the glamorous fighters that filled the recruitment posters and newsreels. But Calloway’s Whirlwind remained grounded, as it had been for three days, waiting for a replacement part that seemed to exist only in theory.
