Volkswagen layoffs 2026: Volkswagen has approved another roughly 50,000 workforce reductions, taking total planned and agreed job reductions across Volkswagen Group to about 100,000. Another 50,000 VW layoffs, approved on September 3 with the approval of Future Plan 2030, is the biggest escalation yet in the VW restructuring, and management roles are included.
In this episode of The Grind Hotline, we break down the Volkswagen layoffs, VW job cuts, Future Plan 2030, CEO Oliver Blume’s restructuring strategy, the threat facing German auto workers, and what Volkswagen employees should watch next.
Is Volkswagen really cutting 100,000 jobs? Volkswagen already had roughly 50,000 workforce reductions underway across the group. Its supervisory board has now approved approximately 50,000 additional reductions worldwide. That does not mean 100,000 employees were fired overnight. It means VW’s planned workforce reduction has now reached roughly 100,000 positions.
Why is Volkswagen cutting jobs? VW says its European manufacturing network has capacity for more than 500,000 vehicles above demand. Oliver Blume has warned about a major cost disadvantage versus competitors. Volkswagen is battling aggressive Chinese automakers including BYD, weaker performance in China, U.S. tariffs, high European costs and a manufacturing footprint built for more volume than the market needs.
The reaction was brutal: Volkswagen shares rose nearly 6% in early trading after the restructuring agreement. Workers see 50,000 more positions under threat. Investors see lower costs.
And these Volkswagen job cuts go far beyond the factory floor. VW plans to reduce its model portfolio by roughly 50%, cut product complexity by about 75%, flatten management, simplify the organisation, reduce excess factory capacity and target a 9% operating margin. Engineering, procurement, administration, management, software, support functions and suppliers can all feel the pressure as VW removes layers and complexity.
Four German plants deserve special attention: Emden, Zwickau, Hanover and Neckarsulm. Volkswagen says secure competitive follow-on production cannot currently be guaranteed for these sites during parts of the 2031–2034 period. That is not confirmation that all four Volkswagen plants will close. It is a serious warning about future workload, investment and job security.
For VW employees, the biggest warning may arrive before any formal layoff announcement: overtime dries up, contractors disappear, open jobs stay vacant, projects get paused, departments merge, shifts shrink or nobody can clearly explain what vehicle or platform your facility will build next.
Being good at your job does not protect a role when the work itself disappears.
We also cover the quiet power moves workers can make now: identify the Volkswagen plants, platforms and functions receiving future investment; understand when your current programme ends; position yourself early for internal transfers; organise your own employment, pension and performance records; and know what an exit package is worth before you are under pressure to decide.
