The United States generates the most plastic waste globally, producing around 17% of the world’s plastic waste despite representing only 4% of the global population (Ocean Conservancy, 2016).
Other high-income nations and populous countries like China and India also contribute substantially, but nations with better waste management systems, such as those in Europe, have relatively lower pollution rates.
