In 1993, ID Software released DOOM. Often hailed as one of the most influential video games ever created, DOOM established a template for first-person-shooters that was emulated hundreds of times by competitors throughout the mid-to-late 1990s.
These games, deemed "DOOM Clones" due to their blatant similarities with the game they took influence from, have remained beloved in the decades since their release. In the past three years, the industry has seen a resurgence of retro 90's FPS games with the likes of DUSK, Amid Evil and HELLBOUND revisiting 90's design principles in order to create a retro throwback that appeals to long-term fans and newcomers alike.
After recently playing HELLBOUND, I became fascinated by the threads that tie every game in this micro-genre together. So I decided to explore them further.
This is the first episode of DOOM Clones, a brand new series that explores the design, the development and the legacy of important 90's first-person shooters.
