About Lesotho
Lesotho, popularly known as the "Kingdom in the Sky," is wholly landlocked and has the highest lowest point of any country in the universe. Lesotho's history is marked by resilience and adaptation. The Basotho nation was founded in the early 19th century by King Moshoeshoe I, who united various Sotho-speaking groups to fend off external threats. Seeking protection from the encroaching Boers, Moshoeshoe placed his kingdom under British protection in 1868, becoming the British Crown Colony of Basutoland.
Lesotho gained independence from Britain in 1966. The country's post-independence history has been tumultuous, characterized by political instability, coups, and conflict. Despite these challenges, Lesotho has maintained its sovereignty and distinct cultural identity.
