In 1931, a Filipino magician named José Cruz and a 19-year-old woman named Gladys Frix were found dead on the estate grounds. What seemed like a double suicide was ruled a murder-suicide—and the gun belonged to Buddie Candler himself.

But that's just the beginning. This abandoned mansion later became an alcohol treatment center (ironic, given the Candler family's struggle with addiction), then the Georgia Mental Health Institute, and eventually... the filming location for Stranger Things' Hawkins Lab.

This is a story about wealth, tragedy, addiction, and a house that refuses to disappear.
