A playthrough of the majority of caves (all but two) on level 1 in Boulder Dash, published by First Star Software for the Atari 800 in 1984
In high school during the late '50s, Peter Liepa interned at the National Research Council of Canada, aiming for the physics lab but instead landing in the computer center, where he first learned to code on a massive mainframe. His passion grew as he studied math in college, later diving into software consulting. In his late twenties, inspired by playing on an Atari 400, he got his own Atari 800 and connected with young programmer Christopher Gray, who had a game idea needing a machine language overhaul. Liepa reimagined it, adding dirt, rocks, jewels, and a basic physics engine, and soon, Boulder Dash was born.
Published by First Star Software in 1984, it became a hit on Atari 8-bit and later on other systems. Liepa's unique take shaped the game's final form, while Gray’s contributions became a small note in the credits.
