SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Jaz Shelley added another indelible moment to her basketball career at Nebraska.
The junior guard scored 14 straight points in a little more than two overtime minutes to propel NU to its best win of the year, 73-65 over Mississippi State. Shelley finished with 32 points — in part on 7-of-12 shooting from 3-point range — and eight assists as Nebraska got its first victory this season over a Power Six conference opponent.
“I don’t know if I’ve seen anything like that in a span of 90 seconds,” NU coach Amy Williams said on her postgame radio show. “…Just an incredible performance in overtime from her.”
The Huskers (5-2) trailed the Bulldogs (5-2) 59-57 with 3:32 left in OT when Shelley hit two free throws. She then hit 3-pointers at the 2:54, 2:24, 1:54 and 1:11 marks, the last giving Nebraska a 71-63 lead it would not relinquish.

NU had a chance to put away the game in regulation but missed five free throws in the final minute of the game. That left open the door for Bulldog freshman Debreasha Powe to hit a 26-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 57. Williams called the misses “uncharacteristic” — especially when guard Allison Weidner, who missed two, is one of the team’s best shooters, but the collapse provided Nebraska the opportunity to respond.
“For us, to show toughness and grit in times of adversity, that’s got to be part of our character,” Williams said.
Shelley was joined by forward Isabelle Bourne had 18 points, while forward Alexis Markowski — who had to square off against Mississippi State center Jessica Carter — had six points, 15 rebounds and four steals. Markowski held Carter — second-team All-SEC in 2021 — to 15 points and eight rebounds. Carter committed five turnovers and fouled out, too.
“Alexis Markowski took that as a personal challenge,” Williams said.
Nebraska has its hardest week of the season coming up, with road trips to No. 11 Virginia Tech and No. 14 Maryland. The Huskers have never beaten the Terrapins in Big Ten play.
