This classic Carl Goldberg J-3 Piper Cub has been converted to electric power with a 4S 500KV brushless motor and a 60A Turnigy ESC, running a 4S 6400mAh LiPo. It originally used a 12x6 prop, now upgraded to a 13x8.5 for improved performance.
Flight Review:
On the first two flights, I was running the 12-inch prop, but I’ve since switched to the 13-inch, which made a big difference. You’ll see in the first part of the footage that I’m testing thrust and amp draw, comparing how the new prop changes the power profile. The airframe feels much more capable now, and just by changing props, I gained almost a full kilo of extra thrust.
I synced footage from both the undercarriage and top cameras during this flight. The airspace was shared with a few other aircraft in the circuit, I focused on keeping it predictable and clear in the pattern.
The flight was short, but when I checked the battery, it was still over 50%. Even with the higher amperage draw, the new prop feels totally worth it. I’m estimating I can safely stretch flight times to around eight minutes now, with plenty of usable power throughout based on my calculations.
