A slowed, pitch-altered and synthesised version of Images, recorded in 1996, has circulated online for many years. While that version became familiar to listeners, it did not reflect the song’s original musical form or its initial piano-based composition.

This newly restored a cappella version revisits the 1996 recording, adjusting speed and pitch thirty years later to recover the song as closely as possible to how it was originally written and intended. As there is no original recording to work from, this restoration should be understood as an alternative mode of access — a way of exploring and engaging with the vocals (and musicality in the vocal + instrumental version) that exist, in order to examine Harrington’s work in greater depth.

Through careful audio correction, the vocals have been returned to a natural tempo and tonal range, freeing it from the 1996 slowed, altered presentation and allowing the vocal composition to be heard in a more faithful form.

A new recording of Images is currently in progress, presenting the song in its original format with piano, guitar, bass and rhythm, and featuring new vocals performed (recorded in 2020 and 2026) by the original singer, recorded fifty years after the song was first written.

This release forms part of an ongoing effort to recover, restore, and preserve original recordings, vocals and compositions, presenting them as thoughtfully and respectfully as possible in the absence of original source material.
