The next step toward an entirely digitally networked rail infrastructure: Infrastructure in the Cloud. Making it possible to run safety-relevant logic applications on standard multicore processors instead of proprietary hardware, the DS3 platform provides the basis for moving interlockings and radio block centers to the cloud. It is compatible with existing systems and supports current standards like Eulynx or Neupro. It paves the way for a cost-efficient country-wide infrastructure management approach with seamless geo-redundancy of one data center. This increases the availability and punctuality while meeting the highest safety standards in operation.

The “Distributed Smart Safe System”, DS3 for short, is the first platform in the world that enables the usage of commercially available and state of the art multicore CPUs. It enables to process safety-relevant logic applications for rail operations while maintaining the highest level of safety

This eliminates the need for proprietary hardware that was required for interlockings in the past. Existing safety-relevant rail applications and services can be migrated and run in a data center in a safe and secure manner, in this way enabling the bundling of all interlockings in one data center for easier infrastructure management.

Infrastructure in the Cloud provides the basis for seamless geographical redundancy to increase availability by reducing downtime in case of data center failure. It helps to further increase punctuality, reduces life cycle costs, and ushers in the next step toward an entirely digitally networked rail infrastructure with just a few elements such as point machines and balises remaining in the field, while all other components (e.g. axle counters, track circuits) disappear.
