Easily Apply Boiled Linseed Oil to New Pine Wood - Home Repair / Construction
In this video I am demonstrating how I easily Apply Boiled Linseed Oil to New Pine Wood using a 3 inch brush and a 4 inch microfiber roller to apply the oil evenly. I am also using my Gorilla Ladder extended in a "A Frame" to help me achieve the task of Oil Staining the new pine wood without the need for excessive scaffolding.
Use raw or boiled linseed oil to preserve and condition wood, though boiled oil provides a harder finish. It can also be used on wicker furniture.
Paints and varnishes: It is a primary ingredient in oil-based paints, varnishes, and stains.
Other products: It is also used in the production of printing inks, soaps, putties, and linoleum.
Why boil or heat linseed oil?
Faster drying: The heating process initiates polymerization, where the oil cross-links to form a hard, durable film
Natural method: Heating raw linseed oil removes water and a viscous substance called mucilage, making it dry faster without added chemical driers
Store-bought process: Modern "boiled" linseed oil often contains chemical siccatives (drying agents) and is sometimes heated under vacuum to lower the boiling temperature, not to truly boil it
Boiled linseed oil (BLO) is a popular, natural, oil-based finish for wood and other porous materials. It is widely used to enhance natural color, protect surfaces, and improve the flow and gloss of oil-based paints.
Primary Uses-
Boiled linseed oil is a versatile product used across several applications.
Wood Finishing and Protection: This is the most common use. BLO penetrates deep into the wood grain, conditioning, sealing, and protecting unfinished wood surfaces from scratches, nicks, and watermarks. It brings out the natural color and grain patterns, leaving a rich, slightly glossy finish. It is used for furniture, cabinets, doors, handrails, tool handles, and more.
Paint Additive: BLO is used to improve the flow, leveling, and durability of oil-based paints and coatings.
Metal Protection: A thin coat of BLO can be applied to non-moving metal parts, such as cast iron tool surfaces, to prevent rust and oxidation.
Other Materials: It also works as a traditional sealer for porous stone and terracotta tiles.
