The Overseers at Somerset Place (Part I)

Описание: The overseers were part of the plantation’s hired labor force. At any given time, there were 2-3 white overseers and under-overseers living with their families and working at Somerset Place. These men managed the enslaved labor force, and as such were an important part of the Collins family’s attempts to control the enslaved community. Somerset Place, once one of the largest plantations in antebellum North Carolina and now a representative state historic site, is open to the public Tuesday - Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is our aim to offer visitors a comprehensive social history exploring the family life of all former plantation residents: the enslaved community, plantation owners, and hired white and Black employees.
