Since the military coup in Myanmar, or Burma, on February 1, the country has seen mass protest movements that threaten to see its cities devolve into civil war. At the same time some of the recently-ended ethnic conflicts around Burma's periphery have begun to reignite. This is all framed against the backdrop of the burgeoning rivalry in the region between the military's longtime backers: the Chinese Communist Party (which is in the interesting position of also propping up a couple of the breakaway states); and the backers of the seemingly-coalescing opposition forces: America, Britain, Australia, and their allies. Should this continue the slide into full-scale warfare, the humanitarian tragedy that would occur is scarcely imaginable, and could result in the "Balkanization" of Burma. Thus, the world can only pray that this impending apocalypse is somehow averted.
