A giant asteroid roughly 700 meters across — nearly the size of a skyscraper — has just been discovered traveling in a record-breaking 128-day orbit inside Venus’s path, hidden in the Sun’s glare. Named 2025 SC79, this fast-moving rock flies closer to the Sun than most telescopes can safely observe.
Astronomers say this class of “twilight asteroids” may sit in the blind spots of our sky-surveys. While 2025 SC79 poses no immediate threat to Earth, its discovery is a dramatic reminder: the most dangerous objects are often the hardest to spot.
• Size ~ 700 m (City-skyscraper)
• Orbit period: 128 days
• Inside Venus + crosses Mercury’s orbit
Verified by Carnegie Science, Gemini & Magellan observatories.
