A growing population and diverse climate conditions impose a consistent, escalating burden on electricity demand for developing countries like Pakistan. The rapid rise of thermal comfort requirements in the country due to global warming and more frequent temperature peaks is resulting in an increase in demand on the national grid to meet the cooling demand of the country. Therefore, the need of the hour is to develop indigenous solutions for air conditioning applications which are efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly. Thus, a solar desiccant air conditioner (SolDAC) offers a promising alternative solution for the air conditioning of solar energy-rich country.
In the current project, two design variant products are developed: 1) a product, Solar Desiccant Air Conditioner (SolDAC) having a capacity of 7-10 kW (2-3 Tons) and 2) Smart Air Cooler (SAC), which is actually a sub-component of SolDAC, however, it is energy efficient cooling solution, especially for domestic applications. In addition, the key distinction of this project is the successful design and development of a test room equipped with extensive instrumentation for dynamic load testing of the system under controlled wide range of climate and operating conditions of Pakistan. This helped to determine the performance of SolDAC in different regions of Pakistan.
