In the Hunt (1993) by Irem is one of the more interesting games featuring submarines.
Why? Because the machines we control have about as much in common with real submarines as the fact that they float, submerge and fire torpedoes. And that would basically be it.
The game is completely focused on fast-paced action, constant destruction and spectacular explosions. Yes—dynamic action while controlling submarines. Something truly wonderful
It is almost impossible to get bored here, because the screen is constantly filled with targets waiting to be destroyed, and we do not have to worry about running out of ammunition. Whichever way you look at it, In the Hunt offers some of the greatest carnage we have experienced so far.
There is plenty to enjoy: huge and spectacular bosses, beautiful backgrounds, detailed animations and impressive effects accompanying the total destruction happening around us. Add graphics strongly reminiscent of Metal Slug, and we have a really decent arcade game.
Admittedly, it is not quite the same. Destroying machines and underwater installations does not provide as much satisfaction as eliminating entire armies in Metal Slug, but it is still extremely enjoyable.
Unfortunately, In the Hunt never received a direct sequel, which is a shame. The general concept could have been expanded in many different directions, perhaps by replacing the submarines with aircraft, tanks or other heavily armed vehicles. There were plenty of possibilities, but nothing more was ultimately done with the brand.
Our submarine can fire torpedoes directly in front of it and launch missiles towards enemies located above us or on the surface of the water. This means that we often have to concentrate on threats coming from two directions at the same time.
Different power-ups can be collected along the way to improve our weapons. We can also find useful bonuses such as a temporary force field that protects the submarine from damage.
The game is extremely dynamic despite the rather slow movement of our vehicle. Enemies constantly approach from every direction, while missiles, torpedoes and pieces of destroyed machinery fill the screen. The action becomes especially chaotic when two people are playing together.
As befits an arcade production, In the Hunt has a rather uneven difficulty level. More than once, an average player may encounter a situation from which it seems almost impossible to escape without taking damage. The screen can become so crowded that avoiding every projectile is simply unrealistic.
Admittedly, it does not reach the same level of hostility towards the player as GunForce, where from beginning to end we barely have any way to oppose the endless wave of incoming enemies. In the Hunt can be unforgiving, but it usually gives us enough firepower to fight back effectively.
The bosses are definitely among the strongest elements of the game. They are large, heavily armed and visually impressive, frequently occupying a considerable portion of the screen. Fighting them often turns into complete chaos filled with explosions, projectiles and smaller enemies attacking from every possible direction.
In the Hunt is an interesting title mainly because of its unusual theme and the surprising amount of action it manages to combine with submarine combat. It is an unconventional game designed to compete with the finest arcade shooters of its era.
Overall, I strongly recommend it. However, whenever possible, play it with someone rather than alone. The additional submarine makes the destruction even more spectacular and gives us a slightly better chance of surviving the chaos ;)
