Prices of premium durian varieties, including Black Thorn, IOI, D24 and Udang Merah, have dropped to between RM10 and RM15 per kilogram.
The fall follows reports of an oversupply that sent prices of Musang King, widely regarded as the “King of Kings” among durians, tumbling after simultaneous harvests in Raub, Pahang, and Segamat, Johor.
Trader Mohd Azmi Osman said the surplus has allowed more people to enjoy the fruit without the burden of premium pricing. He sources supply from Segamat through wholesalers and orchards, even leasing trees.
Another trader, Md Faizal Mat Daut, said he was happy to sell durians at lower prices compared to before, when they were considered a luxury fruit beyond the reach of lower‑income groups.
The glut has also forced some growers to bypass middlemen and sell directly to consumers at orchard fronts to sustain their businesses.
