Posterior Oblique Sling refers to a subsystem of the body connecting your latissimus dorsi on one side with your gluteus maximus on the opposite side connecting via the thoracolumbar fascia. The POS creates stability (especially of the SI joint), power generation, and efficient rotational movement for day to day activities like walking and running and recreational activities like golf and other sports. Dysfunction here causes increased load and strain on the hamstring complex which can lead to recurrent hamstring strains. Simply working the glute max and lat in isolation doesn’t train the POS to perform optimally. Performing the combination of lat and glute recruitment in a prone (face down) or quadruped position is ideal for fortifying this functional unit of the body.
This exercise is a great (and demanding) example of a the POS in action. Other examples include bird dog, row dog, hinge with contra lateral row, modified pilates swim, split stance with cable pull and the list goes on… Drop a comment if you want me to film more examples!
