Moosfluh is an extensive landslide area located on the left edge of the Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the European Alps. On the northern side of the landslide is the popular ski resort and village of Riederalp. Due to the constant decline of the glacier, the foot of the slope is increasingly losing the stabilizing effect of glacial ice, which causes the slope to start to move. Since the mid-1990s, the unstable slope has been sliding continuously downward, leading to deep cracks in the ground, rock falls and small landslides. At times, the Moosfluh has moved rapidly, for example in the autumn of 2016, by up to 80 cm/day. The following year, the sliding speed slowed down again. However, geologists expect further accelerations❗
