In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 5 Topic 2 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 5 (1844-1877).

This period begins with the ongoing desire for Americans to push westward and settle lands on the frontier. John O'Sullivan coined a term for this most basic of American desires: Manifest Destiny. Basically it just meant that it was the God-given right and responsibility of Americans to possess and inhabit a nation from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans.

Westward migration was certainly spurred on by events like the California Gold Rush, and also by congressional legislation like the Preemption Acts. Other migrants travelled west to seek religious refuge, chief among them, the Mormons.

This insistence to possess lands in the west led to the Texas Revolution and the desire to add California and Oregon to the Union. Thanks to the presidency of James K. Polk, those desires would become a reality.
