I specialize in teaching Arabic to non-Arabic speakers, particularly in a non-Arabic environment, and that is why I am with you today. My intention is to run a course which is going to be based upon one of my publications titled Arabic from the Beginning – Part One, but in this program we will approach the language from the perspective of Ṣarf, Arabic morphology. The course is going to be divided into 18 lessons, and each lesson runs approximately for 30 minutes. In addition to that I will be teaching you useful phrases, useful vocabulary, and most importantly how Arabic words are built through roots and patterns. Initially we will use Latin script transliteration, which in shāʾ Allāh will later be converted into Arabic text as the series progresses. By the end of the course I hope and I have confidence, in shāʾ Allāh, that you will be able not only to read and write Arabic, but also to recognize word roots, understand morphological patterns, and see how many words are connected through the system of Ṣarf.
Arabic is a very logical language. Most Arabic words are built from three-letter roots, and these roots carry a basic meaning. By placing these root letters into different patterns (awzān) we create new words and new meanings. For example, a root may produce a verb, a noun, a doer of the action, or a place where the action happens, simply by changing the pattern while keeping the root letters. As we go through the lessons you will begin to see how Arabic vocabulary grows naturally from this system. So rather than memorizing isolated words, you will start recognizing families of words that share the same root. That is the beauty of Arabic morphology.
So we are about to start lesson number one shortly. You may wish to have a copy of Arabic from the Beginning – Part One so that we can learn together throughout this program. As we move through the lessons we will gradually move from transliteration into Arabic script, and at the same time we will explore how roots, patterns, and word forms work together. Don’t listen to anyone telling you that Arabic is very hard to learn. Arabic is actually a very structured and almost mathematical language, full of clear rules and patterns. Once you understand the system of Ṣarf, the language becomes much easier to understand and expand. Together, in shāʾ Allāh, we are going to master the foundations of Arabic and begin to see how beautifully the words of the language are formed.
