(28 Apr 1978) France's new African policy went a step further in Paris when the leaders of three French speaking African states arrived in the French capital for talks with President Valery Giscard d'Estaing. Critics of d'Estaing have said that his so called "new" African policy is nothing more than a neo-colonialist nostalgia for a time when France had powerful African territories. President Houari Boumedienne of Algeria has even gone as far as accusing France of wanting to act as "the gendarme of Africa." But other African leaders, concerned with the growing influence of the Soviet Union the African continent, have urged European nations, especially France, to take a more active role in African affairs. The Presdient of Djibouti, Hassan Gouled Aptidon, the President of Gabon, Omar Bongo and the President of Cameroon, Ahmadou Ahidjo are the latest visitors to d'Estaing.
