Anaklia, located in the Zugdidi municipality of Georgia near the administrative border with Abkhazia, is a town steeped in history. Situated close to the mouth of the Enguri River and connected to the village of Ganmukhuri by a 540-meter bridge, Anaklia has been inhabited since ancient times. The settlement, historically known as Herakleia, is documented from the 17th century. In the 15th to 18th centuries, Anaklia was a fortified port of the Mingrelian Principality. From 1723, it served as a trading post for the Ottoman Empire, bustling with activity, including the slave trade.

In 1770, Georgian and Russian troops recaptured the port. Throughout the early 19th century, Anaklia was contested between Mingrelia and Abkhazia, with control shifting several times until it was briefly returned to the Abkhaz prince Keles Bey in 1805 after negotiations. It is believed that in 1841, Anaklia, along with modern Shamgona, Koki, and Pakhluani, was ceded to Mingrelia.

During the Soviet era, Anaklia hosted a base for the Black Sea Fleet. The town's main historical attraction is the remains of an 18th-century fortress, a site from which Georgians were once taken into slavery to the Ottoman Empire. In 2012, a memorial commemorating the victims of the Circassian genocide was established here.
