Falsified document or logical excuse? We’ll let you decide.
This is a Valdosta riddle of sorts. Is a Valdosta police badge fully equipped with a time machine in which a Valdosta officer can travel back to when they were a civilian to write police reports? I reached out to Valdosta Police Department for comment on this recent issue, and I will share what they told me.
The cover page for the alleged incident report that relates to the investigation and earliest hours of Paula and Brandon Wade’s disappearance lists officers who were not employed by Valdosta Police Department at the time and were not involved with the early phases of the alleged investigation. The cover page lists Christopher Crews, who is now a lieutenant, as the reporting officer and Terry Hines as the approving officer.
When I called Valdosta Police Department to report this error to the Professional Standards Unit, they developed an answer very quickly. Lieutenant Christopher Crews stated that he made the cover page after the department digitized the file management system. He alleges that he made the cover sheet and that he input the information on the cover sheet. According to his statement, it does not reflect the details of the alleged original incident report. If this is true, why would he use false information opposed to just copying the correct information from the original report? He did not have any logical information to share about why he chose to put false information on the cover sheet.
In the legal and medical field, no sane person wants to put their name on a report that they had nothing to do with. The fact that he transcribed the document does not mean that he would need to put his name on the cover sheet. He would only need to copy the information from the alleged original report. The file management system itself would internally keep a log of the fact that Lieutenant Crews was the individual entering the information.
Paula and Brandon Wade were reporting missing after Paula did not show up for work, her absence was so uncharacteristic that her co-workers went to The Commons Apartments, now known as The Gables, where Paula lived with a roommate and her son, Brandon. Paula’s husband was stationed at a Air Force base in South Carolina at the time.
If you have any information about Paula and Brandon Wade’s disappearance, please contact [email protected] or the FBI at (770)216-3000.
