Several historical sources outside the Bible mention Jesus Christ, providing additional context and perspectives on His life and the early Christian movement. One of the most notable is the Testimonium Flavianum found in the works of the Jewish historian Josephus. Written in the late first century, Josephus briefly refers to Jesus as a wise man, a doer of wonderful works, and the leader of a movement. Although the authenticity of the passage has been debated, with some scholars suggesting later Christian interpolations, it still stands as one of the earliest non-Christian references to Jesus. Roman historians like Tacitus and Suetonius also mention Jesus, with Tacitus recording His execution under Pontius Pilate in the reign of Emperor Tiberius, while Suetonius refers to disturbances in Rome caused by followers of "Chrestus," believed by some to be a reference to Christ.
Additionally, the Talmud, a central text in Rabbinic Judaism, contains references to a figure named Yeshu, who is often identified as Jesus. These references are generally negative, reflecting the tensions between early Christians and Jewish communities. Although debated, these mentions are significant as they show how Jesus was perceived by Jewish scholars of the time. Other sources include the writings of early Christian apologists like Justin Martyr and Tertullian, who defended the historical reality of Jesus using non-Christian records. Even critics of Christianity, such as the Greek philosopher Celsus, acknowledged Jesus' existence, albeit in a hostile manner. Together, these sources, though varied in tone and intent, contribute to a broader historical understanding of Jesus and His impact on the world outside the Christian scriptures.
