Mourning for Trappists slain by Muslims

Several hundred officials, clergymen and sympathisers attended a
mass in Algiers on Sunday (2/6) for seven Trappist monks killed by
Muslim extremists in May. Security was high during the
commemorative service and security forces were deployed around the
building which overlooks Algiers. Paris archbishop Cardinal
Jean-Marie Lustiger, French ambassador Michel Leveque and
diplomats as well as Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia and
leaders of several Algerian parties attended the ceremony. The
fundamentalist Armed Islamic Group, which has long targeted France
for its support for the military-backed government in Algiers,
claimed responsibility for the killings. The bodies of the seven
monks were found a few kilometres from the monastery southwest of
Algiers, from which they were abducted on March 26.
