At what point did it become acceptable to describe parts of Britain as “too white”?
In this video, Alex Phillips and Nuriyah Khan respond to claims that the British countryside needs to be made “more diverse” and ask why racial language is suddenly acceptable when it’s aimed in only one direction.
If a neighbourhood, an institution, or a cultural space were described as “too brown” or “too black”, there would rightly be outrage. Yet when the same logic is applied to historically English rural spaces, it is "progress". That double standard should trouble anyone who believes racism doesn’t depend on who it’s aimed at.
Nuriyah challenges the assumption that all communities relate to British heritage in the same way. Many Muslim communities, she argues, do not show the same reverence for British history, rural traditions, or conservation culture. How many are members of organisations like the National Trust or English Heritage? How many feel a sense of custodianship toward the countryside as a shared inheritance?
