A devastating fire at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack has claimed the lives of 12 patients in the ICU, including an 11-year-old girl from Bhadrak and a 20-year-old patient from Koraput. The state government has announced a judicial inquiry led by retired Justice Laxmidhar Biswal to investigate the causes of the fire, the hospital’s preparedness, and the steps taken to save patients.

A fact-finding committee under the leadership of Development Commissioner Deoraj Kumar has also been formed, comprising six members to provide a detailed report within 60 days. Authorities will examine why the ICU caught fire, the role of hospital staff, and whether emergency protocols were properly followed.

This tragic incident has sent shockwaves across Odisha, raising serious questions about hospital safety and emergency preparedness.
