This is a video expansion on part 1 of a 3-part series I wrote for Modern Drummer called "Swing Style 101."
It's designed to help those who didn't grow up listening to swing music grasp the main differences in swing versus other styles.
A few notes:
1 - Do you ALWAYS avoid the "1?" Absolutely not. It's just one of the most common resolution points that some drummers struggle with (for the obvious reason explained in the video). I certainly did.
2 - In this video I show you a 4-bar exercise to help avoid the "1" but you can make a 2-bar, 8-bar, 123-bar exercise out of it. Whatever works for you.
3 - Please read the Modern Drummer article (Sep 2015) for a more detailed explanation.
4 - Finally, check out some of your favorite records where they're playing swing, and listen for this. Try to pick some phrases that avoid the "1" and start adding them to your comping.
