On the 21 June 1988 (when I was 5 years old) a dramatic fire ripped through the BDH factory in West Quay Road Poole. The fire was huge and set off a series of explosions blowing forty-five gallon chemical drums hundreds of feet into the air. Nearby traffic lights melted in the heat and more than 100 fireman tackled the blaze. At the time it was the largest peacetime evacuation in the UK up to 5,000 people and their pets were removed to safety overnight.
