Nighthawks is the most famous painting by American artist Edward Hopper. He completed this work in 1942. The painting shows a diner in New York City late at night.
The video highlights the theme of urban isolation. There are four people in the diner, but none of them are talking. The couple at the counter sits close together, but they do not look at each other. The man sitting with his back to the viewer is completely alone.
Hopper used bright fluorescent lights in the painting. This was a new technology at the time. The bright light makes the silence inside the diner feel even stronger compared to the dark street outside. Hopper later said that he was painting the loneliness of a large city.
