STORYLINE:
Muslims in Pakistan’s city of Karachi broke their first fast on Thursday, the first day of Ramadan.

Several charitable organizations and philanthropists made arrangements to offer free fast-breaking evening meal Iftar to needy and low-income people in various parts of the city.

Hundreds were handed out the fast-breaking evening meal, Iftar at Karachi's mosque.

“Shopkeepers of the markets donated funds for making arrangements of Iftar. Mostly laborers, shopkeepers, neighbors and travellers break fast in this mosque.

They have been served Biryani, juices and other food items for breaking their fast,” said Riaz Ali, a citizen.

Muslims worldwide begin daily fasting from dawn to sunset as Ramadan starts, marking a period of worship, reflection and charity.

The holy month, the ninth in the Islamic lunar calendar, brings families together for meals to break the fast.
