The "Border Cells" shortcut in Excel provides a quick way to apply or remove the most common cell borders without using the mouse. The primary shortcut revolves around opening the Border tab of the Format Cells dialog box, from which you can use arrow keys to make your selection.
The most efficient method uses a sequence of keys:
1. Alt → H → B → ... (This is the official, menu-driven shortcut for the modern Excel ribbon).
2. Ctrl + 1 → Arrow to Border Tab → ... (A legacy method that is still very effective).
However, the true "power user" shortcut for applying a specific border is to open the menu and then use a mnemonic key.
Most Common & Useful Shortcut:
Apply Outline Border: Alt + H, B, A
Alt + H: Activates the H**ome tab.
`B`: Opens the **B**order menu.
`A`: Applies **A**ll borders (outline and inside).
**Other useful mnemonic keys from the Border menu (after pressing `Alt + H, B`):
O: Apply an O**utline (outside) border only.
**N: Remove all borders (N**one).
**B: Apply a B**ottom border.
**T: Apply a T**op border.
**L: Apply a L**eft border.
**R: Apply a R**ight border.
