One of India’s most astute political analysts has said that Prime Minister Modi is to blame for mishandling President Trump’s ego and provoking steep tariffs and a further penalty on India. Sanjaya Baru minimised the responsibility of Foreign Minister Jaishankar in India’s mishandling of Trump.

“Giving Trump the credit on Operation Sindoor is a small price to pay. It may also be the truth and i think it is.”, he said.

“ I think good sense should have prevailed here in Delhi. This gentleman is seeking something. Let me give it to him because it doesn’t really cost me much to make this gesture to the world’s most important country and most powerful power.”

Mr Baru said the Modi government’s fault arises out of its failure to properly respond to the changing geo-politics between USA, China and Pakistan. For the last quarter century India has sought to keep the US on our side. But now both China and the US have a good equation with Pakistan. He said this is “ perhaps the lowest point for Indian foreign policy”.

He said we’ve come out badly on the tariff issue because we haven’t been able to manage the geo-politics smartly.

He said India now finds itself pushed into a corner where for the first time after 50 years - the last time being President Nixon - the country is being badmouthed and spoken of crudely and rudely by an American president.

Mr Baru praised Pakistan’s handling of the situation. “ I think the Pakistanis have handled Trump very smartly. Not just on the trade issue but even earlier, reaching out to his sons, his family, etc. And then Pakistan also seems to have opened up its oil exploration to President Trump or to the United States.”

Dr Baru has spoken critically, clearly and convincingly and has not hesitated to pin the blame for mishandling Trump on PM Modi. He’s also analysed the changing geo-politics between USA, China, Pakistan and India, which has tilted away from India’s interests.
