Improvisation on a Chaplin tune (2021)

Charlie Chaplin was an English actor, filmmaker and composer who is widely considered to be one
of the most influential figures in the history of cinema, and beyond. Chaplin composed an instrumental
theme for his 1936 movie “Modern Times”. Later, in 1954, John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added
a title (“Smile”) and lyrics based on lines from the film. The lyrics essentially tell the listener to cheer
up, that tomorrow will be brighter, if they smile. The tune, both in the original, instrumental version,
and as a song, was an instant hit. It became a popular standard, being covered and recorded by
numerous artists: Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis, Jr., Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland, Tony Bennett,
Lady Gaga, and Michael Jackson, among others. Pompa-Baldi’s solo piano version opens with a
dreamy introduction leading to an original melody, which he improvised on the tune’s
harmonic progression; this leads to a full iteration of the tune itself, enriched by
counterpoint; three short variations ensue, followed by a brief coda.
