In the second episode of the Big Data MBA educational curriculum, I cover the Big Data Business Model Maturity Index (BDBMI) that I introduced in Episode 01.
The BDBMI provides a benchmark for the critical question of “How effective is your organization at leveraging data and analytics to power your business models?” That is, what does “good” look like, and what’s of possibilities with respect to data and analytic best-in-industry practices?
The BDBMI is comprised of 5 phases, but most organizations are still stuck in Phase 1, the retrospective Business Monitoring phase. Crossing the Analytics Chasm from Phase 1 to Phase 2 requires a use-case-by-use-case approach that exploits the economics of Big Data with the granular customer, product and operational insights or propensities buried in the data.
The first 3 phases of the BDBMI focus on the internal optimization of key use cases; transitioning from Retrospective Reporting to Predicting what’s likely to happen and Prescribing preventative or actionable recommendations.
Phases 4 and 5 are more externally focused on monetizing the insights - not the data - about your customers, products and operations.
Finally, achieving Digital Transformation means creating continuously-learning and adapting culture – both analytics (Deep Learning, AI, ML) as well as from human empowerment perspectives
