🔧 Step 1: Install Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS)
Using Server Manager:
Open Server Manager: Click on the Start menu and select Server Manager.
Add Roles and Features: In the Server Manager dashboard, click on Manage and then select Add Roles and Features.
Role-Based Installation: Choose Role-based or feature-based installation and click Next.
Select Server: Choose the server you want to install the role on and click Next.
Select Server Roles: In the list of roles, check Active Directory Domain Services. A prompt will appear to add required features; click Add Features and then Next.
Select Features: You can choose additional features if needed, but for basic AD DS setup, click Next.
Confirm Selections: Review your selections and click Install.
Post-Installation Tasks: Once installation is complete, a notification will appear in Server Manager. Click on the notification and select Promote this server to a domain controller.
Deployment Configuration: Choose Add a new forest and enter your desired Root domain name (e.g., TEST.local).
Domain Controller Options: Set the Forest functional level and Domain functional level to Windows Server 2025. Enter a Directory Services Restore Mode (DSRM) password.
DNS Options: If prompted about DNS delegation, you can ignore the warning and proceed.
Additional Options: The NetBIOS name will be auto-filled; you can modify it if necessary.
Paths: Accept the default paths for the database, log files, and SYSVOL folder, or specify custom locations.
Review Options: Review your selections and click Next.
Prerequisites Check: The wizard will perform a prerequisites check. If all checks pass, click Install.
Restart: The server will automatically restart to complete the promotion process.
🌐 Step 2: Install DNS Server Role
Installing the DNS Server role is often done during the AD DS promotion process. However, if you need to install it separately:
Open Server Manager: Click on the Start menu and select Server Manager.
Add Roles and Features: In the Server Manager dashboard, click on Manage and then select Add Roles and Features.
Role-Based Installation: Choose Role-based or feature-based installation and click Next.
Select Server: Choose the server you want to install the role on and click Next.
Select Server Roles: In the list of roles, check DNS Server and click Next.
Select Features: You can choose additional features if needed, but for basic DNS setup, click Next.
Confirm Selections: Review your selections and click Install.
Post-Installation Tasks: Once installation is complete, click on the notification in Server Manager and select Open DNS Manager to configure your DNS settings.
🛠️ Step 3: Configure DNS Server
Open DNS Manager: In Server Manager, click on Tools and select DNS to open the DNS Manager.
Configure Forward Lookup Zones: Right-click on Forward Lookup Zones and select New Zone. Follow the wizard to create a new primary zone for your domain (e.g., TEST.local).
Configure Reverse Lookup Zones: Right-click on Reverse Lookup Zones and select New Zone. Follow the wizard to create a new reverse lookup zone for your network's IP address range.
Add DNS Records: Ensure that necessary DNS records (such as A, PTR, and SRV records) are created for proper name resolution.
✅ Final Checks
Verify AD DS Installation: Use the Active Directory Users and Computers tool to ensure that your domain is functioning correctly.
Verify DNS Functionality: Use the nslookup command to test DNS resolution within your network.
Check Event Logs: Review the Event Viewer for any warnings or errors related to AD DS and DNS services.
