Exploring the CONCRETE Ships that Survived World Wars | Powell River

On this leg of our Great Siberian Sushi Run, we explore the Powell River breakwater in British Columbia, where nine historic concrete vessels—once wartime necessities—now stand guard as a floating seawall.

These ships were built in Tampa, Florida, at the McCloskey shipyard when steel was scarce. After the war, they were towed north and repurposed to protect a Canadian logging mill.
