Parkside Middle School hosts its annual House Night, an event filled with friendly competition, creative activities, and the spirit of unity. Organized to bring students, teachers, and families together, this year’s House Night features Parkside’s three houses—Downey, Sydney, and Fitzwilliam—in a series of events and activities designed to foster school pride and community.
The night’s activities include house competitions, bracelet and button making, pumpkin painting, a scavenger hunt, and a DJ-led candy walk. An ice cream truck and concessions add a festive flair, and a LiveSchool Store and raffle prizes keep excitement high. Every student finds something to enjoy, from tricycle races to balloon challenges. Teachers, parents, and students alike celebrate the opportunity to connect and unwind in a spirited environment.
Amy Lutick, a social studies teacher at Parkside Middle, underscores the purpose of the house system. “The benefits of the school having a house system are really just to build a positive climate and culture. And where the students feel like they are welcomed at school and that they really belong here,” Lutick says. Parkside's house system aims to create a culture of support and connection, where every student feels they have a place.
James, an eighth-grade student, finds the competitions to be the highlight of his House Night experience. “My favorite part about House Night was probably the competitions. Like the keep-it-up balloons and the tricycle races,” he says with enthusiasm. For many students, the chance to engage in lighthearted challenges creates lasting memories and strengthens house pride.
Stella, another eighth-grader, appreciates the house system’s impact on student connection. “I like having a house system at this school because it makes people feel connected in ways that they might not already feel connected,” she shares. “It, like, brings people together.” Emma, also in eighth grade, echoes this sentiment, describing the house system as “a way to connect with the people in your grade and the people that have, like, similar last names… the house competitions that we do are really fun.”
As the evening draws to a close, students leave with new memories, friendships, and a renewed sense of belonging. House Night at Parkside Middle School is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of unity, tradition, and the connections that make school a place to call home.
