Pocket-sized Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) generator for world domination? Not quite, but close. In this video, electromagnetic immunity weaknesses in electronic circuits are revealed using handheld burst field generators that intentionally inject localized disturbance fields.
A common weak point in electronics is demonstrated by showing the detrimental effects that an interrupted ground plane on a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) can have on signal traces when exposed to a strong magnetic disturbance field. The burst generators shown are the P1 mini burst generator set from Langer EMV-Technik, with the B11 B-Pulser being used throughout the demonstration. The P11 mini burst field generator creates a localized magnetic disturbance field with a diameter of approximately 3 millimeters at its tip, allowing weak points such as sensitive conducting paths, components, connectors, and grounding structures to be identified directly at the developer's workspace, supporting detailed Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) troubleshooting.
A single magnetic pulse is shown to cause a voltage spike of around 5 volts, despite the burst field generator being set to low intensity and the signal trace being properly terminated with 50 ohms on both sides. This level is sufficient for unwanted resets or other undesirable circuit behavior to occur.
After the ground plane interruption is repaired using a piece of copper tape, the induced voltage is reduced to around one volt, even with the burst field generator set to maximum intensity. The importance of a continuous ground plane for improved electromagnetic immunity and robust circuit behavior is thereby illustrated.
