STORYLINE:
Israeli ground forces and tanks were seen entering the northern part of the Gaza Strip on Friday.
An Israeli army spokesperson said the operation would target areas from which the Israeli army believes Palestinian militants launch rockets into Israel.
They would also be searching for tunnels, which Israel allege are used for smuggling weapons and explosives into Gaza.
Tanks were seen parked on the southern Israeli border, and a convoy later moved across a dirt field into Gaza.
Taking place during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the spokesperson said that the operation would be concentrated in mainly open, unpopulated areas of the strip.
The timing of the operation also coincides with the Jewish holiday of "Sukkot", the fall harvest festival, that commences during the weekend and continues into next week.
