NGO Scam ⚠️ Charity or Business ? Where Your Donation Really Goes ?
How did NGO work turn into a business? Why have questions been raised about these NGOs? And how did we, the common people, become a part of this business?
First, let’s understand what social service actually means.
Social service means working for the welfare of people for the greater good — without any selfish motive. It’s about helping those in need without expecting a return or simple profit. Volunteers give to charity, donate to charity, or contribute through various welfare projects — for example, building someone’s house in Punjab, arranging someone’s marriage, or providing food supplies (ration) to needy families.
Now, let’s understand what an NGO is.
An NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) is a nonprofit organization that operates independently of the government. It is created with a spirit of service, often relying on donations and business donors to carry out its work. Ideally, such organizations are meant to promote social welfare and help people rather than make profit. However, over time, some have started treating NGO work like a simple profit business, raising questions about their transparency and intent.
There is a government website called NGO Darpan, which handles nonprofit registration and keeps data on active NGOs. According to its records, there are around 200,000 NGOs in India — though the number may vary slightly — many of which seek NGO donations in the name of public service and charity.
