STORYLINE:
German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with one of Egypt's main Muslim leaders in Cairo on Sunday on the second day of a four day tour of the Middle East.
Merkel met with the Grand Sheikh of al-Azhar, Mohammad Sayed Tantawi in his offices at Al-Azhar University.
The university is considered one of the most important sources of Islamic learning in Sunni Islam.
During her visit Merkel hopes to draw on German influence in the region as part of increased international efforts to revive the Israel-Palestinian peace process.
Merkel has made the revival of peace efforts in the Middle East a goal of Germany's turn at the six-month rotating European Union presidency and has been meeting with key international and regional players in recent weeks.
Merkel plans to discuss the escalation of violence in the Palestinian territories and the ongoing political crisis in Lebanon during her trip, which also takes her to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.
Merkel also plans to help strengthen economic ties in the region.
