Are old buildings worth keeping?
Kathryn Rogers-Merlino, the director of the Center for Preservation and Adaptive Reuse and an associate professor of architecture at the University of Washington shows some examples from her book 'Building Reuse'.
The Kolstrand building highlighted remnants on site; reused fire doors, machinery parts and ghost signs reflect the buildings industrial past.
The Supply Laundry Building participated in a City of Seattle pilot program for energy codes. It allowed extraordinary flexibility in building and energy design in the existing structure which allowed it to maintain its historic architectural integrity and meet stringent efficiency goals.
The Westside School transformed playful forms into bright, colorful places for students while focusing on performance. After nine months of operation, the school was using approximately 70% less energy over typical school buildings.”
The Rice Fergus Miller office met the strict 2030 Architectural Challenge, resulting in a 78% energy use reduction over the national average for an office building (and is targeted to be net zero by 2030) and uses a building dashboard to monitor and adapt energy use according to seasonal needs.
