Happy Thanksgiving! We're looking at playing the half step below notes within the minor 6th diminished scale of chord. Also, I hope you all will find this to be an interesting follow up to Chris's recent TILFBH episode:
• Half step below is Beautiful EP 72 TILF Ba...
We've talked a lot about borrowing diminished notes on the "on" chord, and "on" notes on the diminished chord, but here we're focusing in on using notes a half step below, which may or may not be within the scale.
In particular, we're focusing on some aspects that can be seen in the tesseract (an app is forthcoming): If we identify the 5th of the "6 on the 5" chord, we can move that note down one half step while also moving any other note down one half step to explore the family of dominants. For G7, we would be playing D minor 6 (the 6 on the 5). Lowering the A within this chord (the 5th of D minor 6) while also lowering F, for example, produces E7. We can quickly predict which dominant 7th we will get by looking at the resulting note in the voice that does not have the A in it. If lowering A and D, we'll get Dflat 7. If lowering A and B, we get B flat 7. This is a wonderful way of exploring the "family of dominants" through a generalized borrowing concept!
On the diminished chord, this will always produce notes from the octatonic scale for that diminished, which, in turn, implies the family of the "V of V" in that sense
