Protesters and mourners gathered in the Iraqi cities of Basra and Najaf on Sunday (March 1), rallying against the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
People carrying flags, images of Khamenei and a symbolic coffin marched in the streets of Basra and Najaf. Clerics and mourners also attended a condolence ceremony in Najaf.
Elsewhere in Iraq, protests turned violent. Police fired tear gas and stun grenades to scatter hundreds of pro-Iranian protesters who had gathered outside the Green Zone diplomatic compound in the capital Baghdad, where the U.S. embassy is located.
Iraq has one of the world's largest Shi'ite Muslim populations after Iran, and saw the scenes of some of the worst unrest from crowds angry at the U.S.-Israeli attacks.
