2 Days at Urbnsurf Sydney: I SURFED IN BOARDSHORTS in the cold! 🥶 I finally ticked the Sydney wave pool off the bucket list, but I made a rookie gear mistake that had everyone losing their minds. I spent two days figuring out the wave quirks, testing two different boards (Fish vs. G Skate!), and finding the best settings.
The Full Story & Session Breakdown:
This was a challenging but epic two days. Between forgetting my summer suit (and having a huge hole in my winter one!), I was left surfing in boardshorts and realizing just how cold that water can get!
I hit the wave pool across the Expert, Advanced, and Advanced Turns settings. I quickly realized anything less than Advanced isn't worth the cost. Expert and Advanced have a relatively easy take-off, but the wave really starts to get tricky when it bowls up on the main section. I benefited hugely from some tips from the guards to figure out some of the wave's quirks—it’s definitely a unique beast to navigate. This isn't my best work, I was very tired and had competed at a jut jitsu tournament not long before this session.
My Surf Gear & Technical Review:
Board Breakdown:
Board 1 (Twin Fin): New Wave custom 6'2 modern fish with a swallow tail (35L) ridden as a twin.
Board 2 (Performance): Channel Islands G Skate 6'2 stepped swallow tail (40L) ridden with AMT2+1 fins.
Conclusion: I would not recommend using twin fins here. Save them for the ocean and bring a rounded square tail performance board instead.
Important Tip: Because the wave is fresh water, you'll need slightly more volume than you would typically ride in the ocean for that extra buoyancy.
(For reference, I’m 6'3" and weigh 105-110 KG).
