Our friends make their way through the woods towards Fort Henry, now rejoined by the company of David Gamut, when they then stumble upon the tracks of a few white hunters that kill deer and beavers for their fur and horns. An encounter with a wild wolf, Yaku, then drives our friends to flee to the fur hunters’ hideout. There, one of the hunters has just discovered a Native-American child, Little Knife, who has been made into a servant. Little Knife had attempted escape. Our friends intervene in order to defend the youngster, and then discover with horror that the other three hunters are in the forest hunting a large bear whose tracks they’d picked up on. As it happens, our friends will in the nick of time save Nootka, who’d been hunted in a cave. Big Snake will treat Nootka’s wounds, and the bear will then rejoin our friends on their journey, along with Little Knife and his wolf.
