Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family, a day dedicated to honouring and reflecting upon the family life of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. In the readings, we are given valuable insights and guidance on how to live out our own familial relationships in a way that is pleasing to God.
In the first reading from the book of Sirach, we are reminded of the importance of honouring our parents and the role they play in our lives. The commandment to honour our father and mother is not simply a suggesion, but rather a divine instruction. Our parents have been instrumental in our formation and have nurtured us with love and care. We must cherish and honor them, not only materially but also by showing them respect, gratitude, and support.
The psalmist in Psalm 128 praises family life and shows the blessings in store for those who care for their families while trusting GOD.
The second reading from the letter to the Colossians presents a series of virtues that are necessary for the healthy functioning of a family. We are called to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, patience, and forgiveness. These virtues are the building blocks of harmonious relationships within our families. By practicing them, we create an atmosphere of love and understanding that fosters growth and unity.
